Conisbrough Castle

Your visit to Conisbrough Castle will see you witness one of the best examples of Circular Norman Keep Towers in the United Kingdom. It was built in around 1180 by the fifth Earl of Surrey Hamelin Plantagenet who was the half brother of Henry II.

Fortunately in the 1640's the castle was declared indefensible by the Parlimentary Forces of Oliver Cromwell and as a result was not demolished unlike many castle in England at the time. This has allowed it to remain standing for future generations to enjoy.

A lack of care since this time has seen certain areas of the castle crumble however preservation work carried out in the middle of the twentieth century has allowed much of the castle to be kept safe. Recently a visitors centre has been constructed at the site as well as a tea room and floodlights. In 1994 roofing and floors were introduced to the keep tower.
