Dover Castle

Standing on the White Cliffs of Dover is the magnificent Dover Castle that can be seen for miles around on the Kent horizon. Dover Castle has been a vital stronghold since the Iron Age and much of the current form of the castle can be attributed to William the Conqueror who strengthened the fortifications as they now stand today. Dover Castle today still shows interesting signs of Gothic and Norman decoration which you can see for yourself in the castle chapel areas.

It is not just the castle that is magnificent however as underneath Dover Castle you will find an incredible network of underground tunnels that were not only used for middle age conflicts but were a great asset to Great Britain during the Second World War. Today the tunnels are open for all to see the medical and military applications that were undertaken in the tunnels during the Second World War and various exhibitions illustrate what life was like for the men and women working in them. Dover Castle is a fabulous day out for all the family and an interesting look at two legendary periods in history all contained in the same area, if you are in Dover and have the time this is an essential visit.
